Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Even someone who doesn’t like pantomimes would have enjoyed Wells Little Theatre’s production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The hilarious script (written once again by Vicky Orman), and catchy and well arranged pop songs were brilliantly performed by all the cast.
Alisa Creaser was an ideal Snow White, complemented perfectly by principal boy Nicky Hann, who played the part of Prince Darion.
The eclectic choice of pops songs helped to convey aspects of the story, helped by the painstaking lyric rewriting by Katy Biggs, (although here I must declare an interest!), the expert musical direction of Sheila Ross and the tight performances of cast and musicians. A good example was the rendition of ’Killer Queen’ by the evil Queen Malicia, played with a nice mixture of vanity and petulance by Emma James. (“So suck it up, sweet Snow White.”) Harmony arrangements by Nick Barlow alongside Sheila Ross made for one of the musical highlights of the show, along with the beautiful duet, ‘Love is an Open Door’, sung by Snow White and Prince Darion.
Above all, the show was properly funny and nothing was allowed to get in the way of the humour. Poignant moments were punctured nicely by clowning around and special mention must go to Tristan Hann and Jonathan Samsam (as Scruff the Dog and Ollie) who ad-libbed wonderfully throughout. All in all, a show ideally suited to pantomime lovers and sceptics!
